Mohammed Shami stated that he is still at his peak despite being omitted from the Indian team for the upcoming tour against New Zealand. The 36-year-old bowler attributed his exclusion to the fact that the pitch was better suited for spin bowling.

Shami has accumulated 462 international wickets in 197 matches across all three formats of the game. During the Champions Trophy in March 2025, Shami was the joint-highest wicket-taker for India.

He also served as the leading wicket-taker when India secured the 2023 ODI World Cup. On 15 November 2023, Shami took the wicket of Lockie Ferguson at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

KL Rahul caught Ferguson during that match, which India won. The tour starting Thursday includes a five-match T20 series, five ODIs, and a two-test series.

Shami said, "If we are playing in the Ranji Trophy, it is to win the title for the state, right? Goals should always be there. I don't deny that I have that goal." He added, "In any profession, you shouldn't leave hope. You should always have a goal."
