Google is updating its AI search results to display inline links more frequently within generated responses. The company stated it intends to provide "continued and substantial increases to the presence of inline links in our AI experiences" to "ensure key sources are easily clickable right when you need them."
Unlike traditional search results that present a list of links, AI Overviews and AI Mode provide answers in a customized view. Testing is underway to show relevant links at the top of a response, providing context for sites that are among a few options for specific tasks or information.
Link carousels announced in May are being rolled out to more languages and locations for articles deemed timely. Google is also making links at the end of a query more prominent by using image thumbnails and a design that is easier to click.
Clickable links in AI mode are being tested to allow users to search for the profiles of creators and publishers. More than 400 publishers currently participate in the News AI pilot program, which Google first announced in December.
This licensing program compensates publishers for the use and delivery of enhanced content to develop new AI features. The Financial Times, CNN, and Axios have recently joined as partners in the initiative.
