Microsoft is redesigning the Windows 11 Search experience, enabling users to control settings, locate files, and interact with Copilot directly from the taskbar. The update is scheduled for release this fall.
During a demonstration, Pavan Davuluri showed the new Search experience, allowing toggling of settings like dark mode and Do Not Disturb. Furthermore, users can trigger a volume slider above the prompt simply by typing “increase mic volume”.
The updated Search interface will permit users to communicate with the new Copilot application without needing to open Copilot separately. Additionally, users with a phone connected to Windows will gain the ability to send text messages from the taskbar without physically picking up their mobile device.
Microsoft also announced Hybrid Intelligence, a new suite of software orchestration tools designed to run artificial intelligence models locally on Windows PCs. When activated, the updated Copilot application can access local files and perform actions across various apps and system settings.
Developers will find it easier to build native Windows applications through Copilot, receiving support for Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC). Autopilot can now use files stored directly on the PC to inform its responses and execute tasks, bypassing the need to send data to the cloud.
For instance, Autopilot assisted an employee in preparing tax documents by locating necessary files, renaming them, grouping them into a ZIP archive, and drafting an email for an accountant. Copilot features powered by Hybrid Intelligence are set to roll out to Windows PCs over the coming months.
Microsoft utilised its October 7 event to modify how Windows manages, routes, and contains AI agents. Privacy concerns have been raised regarding third-party agents, such as Meta's Muse.
