An unofficial browser port allowed running Grand Theft Auto V in Chrome, according to reports. The project reportedly supported both Story Mode and free roam gameplay features.
Abhishek Yadav shared the project on X, posting footage that demonstrated GTA V operating within a browser environment. The image attached to Mr. Yadav's post was subsequently removed following a copyright complaint.
Technical analysis revealed the project utilised WebAssembly and WebGPU to execute GTA V locally inside the browser. Sources indicated that Rockstar’s RAGE engine was reportedly compiled for WebAssembly.
The browser version did not reduce the full game to approximately 700MB, with the initial startup reportedly requiring about 582MB. Furthermore, the site served roughly 20.9GB of game data, and the project was built from GTA V’s original C++ source code.
The playable game stopped being served by PlayGTA5.com within hours of gaining viral attention. Rockstar and Take-Two have not publicly confirmed issuing a takedown notice regarding the port.
Authorities confirm that there remains no official browser version of GTA V from Rockstar Games.
