Electronic Arts to lay off 400 staff and close BioWare studio

Electronic Arts plans to dismiss 400 employees as part of a workforce reduction affecting 3% of its staff. The US video game publisher will also shut down its BioWare studio, which was established in 1995.
Fifty workers at BioWare are included in the planned layoffs. Electronic Arts acquired BioWare in 2007.
The company will cancel the next game in the Mass Effect series and a planned title in The Sims franchise known as Project Lotus. Staff numbers for the skateboarding game Skate will also be reduced.
Investment will continue for sports games, Apex Legends, Battlefield, and upcoming Marvel and Star Wars titles. A Saudi-led buyout of $55 billion took Electronic Arts private in August.
The transaction added $18 billion in debt to the company.
