PCDMA urges State Bank to cut policy rate to boost economy
The Pakistan Chemicals & Dyes Merchants Association (PCDMA) has requested the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to lower the current policy rate. Saleem Mukati, Chairman of the PCDMA, called on Governor Jameel Ahmed to consider a reduction in the interest rate.
A Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting is expected to take place on 26 October. Lowering the policy rate would accelerate economic activity and alleviate the shortage of capital.
Mukati stated that the current high policy rate represents a serious hurdle for business circles. The Chairman argued that bringing the policy rate down to single digits would have a positive impact on the national economy.
Mukati claimed that raising interest rates merely in the name of controlling inflation would not prove effective. He further asserted that raising interest rates would turn out to be a failed measure.
