Foreign animal health experts are scheduled to arrive in Karachi to examine the Safari Park elephant Madhubala. Safari Park veterinarians have been unable to pinpoint the precise cause of Madhubala's declining health.
The elephant has shown signs of a foot infection alongside significant swelling in her right hind thigh. More than a week ago, Madhubala collapsed and required the use of a crane and harness for lifting.
Dr. Amir Khalil of the international animal welfare organization Four Paws, alongside a Sri Lankan expert, are expected to reach Karachi on 8 October 2026. These specialists will conduct an assessment of Madhubala and Malika at the Safari Park.
Madhubala and Malika represent the final two elephants remaining within Pakistan. Previously, Madhubala was kept at the Karachi Zoo.
The KMC established an 18-member body last year following the successive deaths of captive elephants. Noor Jehan passed away in 2023 after falling within her enclosure.
An autopsy of Jehan revealed severe blood parasitic infection, internal trauma, and a lack of adequate medical care. Four Paws supervised the relocation of Madhubala to the Safari Park.
Sonia died a month after Madhubala was reunited with her and Malika. Laboratory reports indicated that Sonia suffered from multiple chronic illnesses affecting nearly all major organs.
