The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has launched a series of initiatives to improve patient care, modernise medical infrastructure, and strengthen clinical services. These efforts include expanding postgraduate training programmes and streamlining the procurement of essential medicines and medical equipment.

Administrative matters are being cleared to ensure that inpatient wards and outpatient departments receive uninterrupted supplies of medical goods. Surgical units are currently receiving essential instruments, specialized sutures, and other necessary consumables.

With support from the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, PIMS is upgrading outdated electromedical equipment in several departments including General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Renal Transplant Services, and the Dialysis Unit. Tender documents for technical upgrades and safety improvements have reached the financial and technical evaluation stages.

The Department of General Surgery plans to introduce master’s degree programmes in Minimal Access Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, and Breast Surgery. These new master's degrees will be affiliated with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU).

PIMS also intends to establish a dedicated Department of Thoracic Surgery with its own operating facilities and an independent Emergency Medicine Department. Structural rehabilitation is underway at the Mother and Child Health (MCH) Centre to increase bed capacity and provide dedicated operating suites.

Proposals are being developed for new specialized services in Lifestyle Medicine, Endocrinology, Spine Surgery, Paediatric Cardiology, and Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery. Thirty nursing professionals have recently completed international certification in clinical management, patient safety, and nursing leadership.

Hospital administration is implementing the Federal Central Induction Policy to ensure that house officers, nursing personnel, and postgraduate trainees are selected based on merit.
