Sardar Masood Khan stated that the United Nations must be strengthened and revitalised to preserve a rule-based international order and prevent a world where might becomes right. During the visit of António Guterres to Pakistan, Khan noted the visit was significant due to Pakistan’s mediation efforts and Middle East volatility.
Khan also pointed out that the Secretary-General’s visit to the NDMA highlighted Pakistan’s cooperation on disaster management. Furthermore, Khan’s visit to UNMOGIP underlined the relevance of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
Discussions during the meeting covered global governance challenges, including AI, technological sovereignty, and climate action. Ambassador Khan observed that António Guterres remains vocal on climate action, sustainable development, Gaza, Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.
The Secretary-General’s capacity to translate advocacy into decisive action, Khan noted, was restricted by geopolitical divisions and the veto power within the Security Council. Consequently, the inability of the United Nations to fulfil its role under the UN Charter shifted responsibility to individual states and regional actors, according to Khan.
