Gianni Infantino is seeking re-election as president of FIFA for a fourth and final term in the March 2027 election. The 56-year-old leader previously launched and subsequently shelved a proposal to permit private investment into the World Cup.

This FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan, which surfaced in July 2026, intended to establish a commercial subsidiary to manage major events like the World Cup. The venture capital firm owned by Josh Kushner was designated as the primary investor for the FFE initiative.

UEFA, led by Aleksander Ceferin who is running for re-election as head of UEFA, initiated legal challenges in US courts to obtain FFE documents. FIFA is currently contesting the lawsuit filed by UEFA.

Terrence Burns stated, "That lack of transparency is a rock in Infantino's shoe that will not fade away." Michael Payne noted that if the president is re-elected, it will redefine the term Houdini and warned that FIFA will be on the brink of civil war.
