Four Gemini 4 Argon AI agents successfully finished Minecraft and defeated the Ender Dragon in an autonomous experiment. The agents achieved this feat without any human intervention by utilizing a general-purpose agentic model.
Each AI controlled a player character through the open-source Mineflayer library. Communication between the entities occurred via shared memory and in-game chat.
Specific roles were assigned to the agents, with Janesick focusing on tool creation. Gyldenia gathered food and supplies while Auratian activated a key portal.
Bulicame constructed shelters to defend against Endermen and delivered the final blow to the Ender Dragon. The entire experiment lasted 27.23 hours during which the agents wrote and executed 2,783 programs.
During the session, the agents exchanged 229 messages and died a combined 605 times. A fifth AI agent, known as the Observer, independently monitored the session.
The experiment consumed 1.35 billion input tokens. Google researchers estimated the cost at $810 using Gemini’s list price, or $1,620 at the standard price.
Google researchers stated this was the first end-to-end autonomous completion of Minecraft by AI agents using only the standard Mineflayer library. The agents did not use pre-scouted world seeds or other Minecraft-specific tools written by humans.
