Donald Trump announced that Russia agreed to release 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately into the American and global marketplace. The US Treasury Department issued a general license on Friday to allow the importation of Russian diesel until 7 April 2027.
Russia will provide 500,000 tonnes of diesel in November and another 1,000,000 tonnes after that month. Alexander Novak confirmed that export volumes could reach three million tonnes per month in the future, with a further three million tonnes expected within a short period.
Trump stated on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine reached an energy ceasefire, noting that lowering prices for Americans, especially farmers, ranchers, and truckers is his greatest priority. The average diesel price in the US currently stands at $6.28 per gallon, having risen 70 percent since the US-Israeli war with Iran began in February 2026.
Trump expects gasoline prices to fall soon to levels between $1.85 and $1.95 per gallon and will direct department heads to find ways to control diesel prices. Seven senators, including four Republicans and three Democrats, stated the deal violates US laws.
Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis and John Curtis, as well as Democrats Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal and Ron Wyden, said the United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. Volodymyr Zelensky described the situation as an investment in a war that must be ended.
