Elgin Community College removed six Flock safety cameras in April 2026 after the surveillance contract reached its expiration. The institution originally installed the equipment to improve security for students on campus.

Concerns emerged within the college administration regarding whether Flock shared data with Customs and Border Patrol. School leaders also worried that camera feeds lacked proper security measures and that employees or law enforcement officers were abusing data access.

In October 2025, the college requested that Flock take down its cameras. Peggy Heinrich stated that Flock rejected this request, claiming it had not violated any terms of the contract.

Officials contacted the company again in December 2025 and offered to pay for the final five months of the agreement while requesting camera removal. Staff members began covering the devices with zip ties and black trash bags.

Workers in an unmarked vehicle repeatedly took off these coverings until the equipment was finally decommissioned.
