Gabon lifts social media ban after eight months of restrictions

Gabon lifted a ban on social media on Saturday, reversing a restriction that had been in place for eight months. The High Communication Authority (HAC) announced the policy reversal, ending a prohibition that began on 17 February.
Officials at the High Communication Authority (HAC) previously stated that online content was deepening divisions and fuelling conflict within the country. Gabon is home to a population of approximately 2.5 million people.
Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema faced a wave of social unrest less than one year after his election. The opposition claimed the suspension of social media platforms was an abuse of power.
