Public health advocates have called for the implementation of clear warning labels on the front of packaged food products to improve dietary choices. The Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) emphasized that prominent labels can assist consumers in rapidly identifying items with high sodium levels.

Reducing the intake of salt is a critical step toward preventing hypertension and associated cardiovascular conditions. High sodium consumption serves as a primary risk factor for high blood pressure, which elevates the probability of suffering from strokes and heart disease.

A large portion of sodium in modern diets originates from processed and packaged food items. Front-of-package warnings allow shoppers to recognize high-sodium products without needing to decipher complicated nutritional data on the back of a package.

These labels may also prompt manufacturers to reformulate their products and lower salt content. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that adults should limit their daily sodium intake to less than 2 grams.

According to the WHO, adult salt consumption should remain below 5 grams per day. Advocates are pushing for evidence-based labelling policies combined with public awareness campaigns to lower the burden of non-communicable diseases in Pakistan.
