Pakistan to replace machine-readable passports with electronic versions within month

The federal government will discontinue issuing machine-readable passports (MRPs) to fully transition to electronic passports (e-passports) within one month. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry informed the National Assembly of the shift, noting that only e-passports will be available at domestic offices and Pakistani missions abroad once the change is complete.
Current machine-readable passports will stay valid until their specific expiration dates. Dr. Chaudhry stated that Pakistan is adopting e-passports to keep pace with technological advancements and changing immigration requirements worldwide.
The minister explained that the existing passport system required an upgrade to meet evolving global immigration standards. According to Dr. Chaudhry, the electronic chip embedded in e-passports would make forgery impossible.
Operational challenges at passport offices and the country's large population could potentially delay the rollout, Dr. Chaudhry warned.
