Canada updated its immigration processing times tool to offer personalized estimates for work permit applicants. The new functionality applies to individuals extending a work permit from inside Canada and international graduates applying for their initial post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) added these personalized estimates to its processing times webpage in late September 2026. As of 26 September 2026, approximately 202,900 applicants awaited decisions from the department.

Separately, Temporary Relief for Provincial Nominees began on 9 June 2026 for certain permanent residence applicants under the base Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This temporary arrangement permits eligible provincial nominees to apply for a bridging open work permit (BOWP) without first obtaining an acknowledgement of receipt for their permanent residence application.

The temporary measure for provincial nominees is set to remain active until 31 December 2026. Previously, IRCC introduced personalized processing times for those applying for citizenship and permanent residence in October 2025.
