US Coast Guard intercepts fuel ship Grace in Caribbean Sea near Cuba

The US Coast Guard intercepted the cargo ship Grace, which was transporting fuel destined for Cuba, on 5 September in the Caribbean Sea between Cuba and Mexico. A Guard team boarded the vessel and subsequently escorted it to Mexico.
Mexican navy inspection personnel confirmed the presence of substantial volumes of fuel within the ship’s ballast tanks. Furthermore, the vessel was found carrying multiple containers suspected of holding illegal fuel.
Admiral Kevin Lunday, the commandant of the Guard, stated that 'The high seas are not a sanctuary for lawlessness.' Oil shipments from Cuba's usual suppliers, Venezuela and Mexico, ceased suddenly after the United States removed Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro in January.
