European nations agree to release diesel stocks amid market pressure
European countries agreed to release diesel stocks, according to reports detailing discussions among EU governments. EU governments discussed a proposal for European countries to release 50 million barrels of diesel.
The release of these volumes would occur over a twenty-day period. This proposed 50-million-barrel release represents roughly 17% of the entire EU emergency reserves for diesel and gasoil.
Furthermore, the proposed release accounts for approximately 3% of the bloc's yearly consumption of the fuel. French President Emmanuel Macron chaired a videoconference with G7 leaders on Friday afternoon.
The United States had previously demanded that major European nations release 100 million barrels of diesel within a twenty-day timeframe. US diesel futures dropped by more than 4% to $4.4491 a gallon.
Benchmark European diesel futures saw a fall exceeding $100 a metric ton.
