Atlantic season sees four named tropical storms in September, forecasters note

Four named tropical storms formed in the Atlantic basin during September, specifically Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo, and Hanna. The US National Hurricane Center previously predicted that the Atlantic season would see between eight and fourteen named storms.
Forecasters at Colorado State University suggest that a strong El Niño pattern will likely lead to below-normal activity across the Atlantic. Conversely, El Niño typically suppresses Atlantic activity but tends to bring an active season to the eastern North Pacific.
To date, seventeen named storms have developed in the basin, which included nine hurricanes, seven of which were major hurricanes. Accumulated Cyclone Energy currently registers at a level about 2.5 times more active than the normal seasonal average.
Sea surface temperatures in the central-eastern Pacific have surpassed the record set during the 2015 El Niño event.
