Field Marshal Asim Munir visits Tehran to discuss regional de-escalation
Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on 24 August 2026 to meet with senior Iranian officials. The military leader travelled with a delegation of Pakistani officials to hold talks focused on breaking the military stalemate and exploring a negotiated settlement.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also visited Tehran on 24 August 2026. Naqvi reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to mediating between Washington and Tehran on 19 October 2026.
The Interior Minister credited Field Marshal Munir with a remarkable role in bringing the two sides closer and stated he "never gave up". Diplomatic efforts include the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed on 18 June 2026, which produced an interim peace agreement.
That memorandum faltered amid renewed fighting between Iran and the United States. Pakistan and Qatar jointly organised the Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland.
Mohsin Naqvi said he "never gave up".
