Deisseroth, Hegemann, and Nagel win Nobel for light-controlled gene techniques

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel received the 2026 Nobel prize in physiology or medicine for their work on techniques controlling genes with light, known as optogenetics. Thomas Perlmann, the Nobel committee secretary general, stated, "It's a really new era in neuroscience thanks to this methodology".
The trio's research built upon the discovery of a light-sensitive protein by Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel during the 2000s. This key protein, which they identified, was named channel-rhodopsin.
Currently, Peter Hegemann resides at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany.
