Govt raises petrol price, cuts diesel rate; new prices take effect Tuesday
The government increased the petrol price by Re0.88 per litre on Monday, setting the new retail cost at Rs393.64 per litre. Concurrently, the government reduced the high-speed diesel rate by Rs1.88 per litre, meaning HSD will retail at Rs397.76 per litre.
These revised prices will apply starting on 6 October 2026, which is a Tuesday. Previously, the high-speed diesel price had fallen from a high of Rs520.35 recorded on 3 April 2026.
The petroleum sector's pricing mechanism saw the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) take responsibility for setting fuel prices daily, based on international market trends. Petrol fuels private transport, small vehicles, rickshaws, and two-wheelers primarily.
Both petrol and high-speed diesel account for monthly sales volumes between 700,000 and 800,000 tonnes.
