Pakistan and United States agree to boost energy sector cooperation

Pakistan and the United States agreed to enhance cooperation in the energy sector during a meeting on 26 October. Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik met with US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker to discuss the partnership.
Malik briefed Baker on the specific measures Pakistan has implemented to maintain energy security. Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has created significant challenges for fuel availability in the region.
The two nations discussed potential long-term energy supply contracts and investment in the country’s refinery upgradation programme. Pakistan's refineries are set to ink upgrade deals worth $6 billion.
The refinery upgradation programme could offer investment opportunities for US financial institutions. Managing Directors of Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) briefed participants on interest shown by US companies in LNG supply to Pakistan.
Baker expressed optimism about establishing long-term energy supply contracts.
