Solar power surpasses nuclear output in Pakistan, becoming largest source by summer 2025
Solar power generation reached 36.3 TWh, surpassing nuclear output for the first time in Pakistan by summer 2025. In 2025, Pakistan's nuclear electricity production amounted to 22.5 terawatt-hours (TWh), marking a 3.7 per cent increase from the previous year.
Pakistan currently operates six nuclear reactors, providing a combined operating capacity of 3,262MW. The first concrete pour for the base slab of the reactor building occurred on 30 December 2024.
Furthermore, the C-5 reactor is scheduled for completion by the year 2030. Between 2017 and mid-2026, Pakistan imported over 58 GW of solar panels, with China supplying the majority of this equipment.
Of the total solar panels imported, 40 GW, representing 69 per cent, arrived between 2024 and mid-2026. This solar panel influx established Pakistan as the second-largest single-country import market for solar panels, trailing only the Netherlands.
In 2025, Pakistan was recorded as China’s primary customer for solar panels.
