RHS predicts record mushroom sightings across the UK this autumn

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) predicts that mushroom sightings across the United Kingdom could reach record levels this autumn. A shift from drought conditions to wetter weather may allow certain species to flourish.
Colin Unsworth observed that fly agaric and blushers appeared in good numbers during his recent foraging trip. However, Unsworth noted that porcini mushrooms had been somewhat scarce on the ground.
He also mentioned that an EU-wide shortage of edible fungi was present. Unsworth cautioned that people must be aware of look-alike mushrooms.
Following the drought in 2025, the RHS recorded a 43% increase in enquiries concerning garden fungi. Experts generally view fungi as an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.
A typical foraging area can yield twenty to thirty different edible mushroom types.
