Farmers demand policy inclusion citing livestock's major role in Pakistan's economy
Dairy and livestock farmers are demanding a seat at the policy table. Livestock constitutes the largest part of Pakistan’s agricultural economy, contributing 62.45 percent of agricultural value added and 14.64 percent of GDP in 2025-26.
Pakistan Kissan Ittehad seeks to convene farmers, dairy specialists, and relevant bodies to ascertain the actual cost of producing one litre of milk. The organisation proposed a farm-gate price of Rs250 per litre alongside a profit margin of 25-30 percent.
Furthermore, the government must explain the economic rationale behind any price it imposes. Policy frameworks must grant commercially viable producers the chance to achieve a reasonable return.
Establishing verifiable production costs and pinpointing where taxes, imports, inefficiencies, and regulation distort the supply chain requires government, producers, dairy experts, and consumer representatives to collaborate.
