Bluetongue crosses into Scotland; 2026-27 season records high case numbers

Bluetongue crossed into Scotland this summer, marking a significant development for animal health monitoring. Defra has recorded 2,201 cases of the disease so far during the 2026-27 season.
This current 2026-27 season reports more cases than the combined total of the preceding three seasons. The disease was first observed in England in 2023.
Experts link the transmission of bluetongue to the temperature of the surrounding environment. In September alone, 1,103 cases were documented.
Robyn Munt, the vice-president of the National Farmers’ Union, stressed the need for "constant vigilance." Munt also described the situation as "really challenging."
Tom Cantillon, a senior analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, suggested the outbreak is a "harbinger of things to come."
