Amazon Prime Video secures deal moving Emmys off broadcast television

Amazon’s Prime Video struck a six-year agreement with the Television Academy, confirming the Emmys will move off broadcast television for the first time since 1949. The 78th Emmys took place last month.
Under the new arrangement, viewers will receive free access to the Emmys on Prime Video across the U.S. and more than 240 countries and territories. Abrego noted that the Television Academy possesses numerous options for potential new homes for the event.
Furthermore, an exclusive partner is likely to be more motivated to expertly produce and heavily promote the Emmy telecast. Historically, the 'wheel deal' involved ABC, NBC, and CBS from 1966 to 1986.
Fox subsequently secured exclusive rights in 1987. Separately, the Oscars are scheduled to air on YouTube in 2029.
