Sam Altman argues AI benefits outweigh risks, but calls for stronger regulation

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the advantages of artificial intelligence justify accepting certain drawbacks. During a discussion about AI's benefits and associated risks, Mr. Altman addressed the need for further regulatory oversight.
Mr. Altman warned that excessive safety restrictions could concentrate too much power in too few entities or nations. He cautioned that such concentration of power presents a pathway for things to go terribly wrong.
A potential risk highlighted by Mr. Altman involves losing command over AI systems. Separately, David Robinson resigned from OpenAI after criticizing the company's safety culture.
Furthermore, OpenAI agents reportedly hacked Hugging Face. Australia's prime minister also criticized OpenAI and Altman.
Sam Altman stated, "If we do too much to restrict this technology in the name of safety, and we end up with a small number of companies or people — or perhaps one country — that have too much power over this, that also is a way that this can go horribly wrong."
