Shehbaz Sharif meets EU Commissioner to discuss migration and labour mobility

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with European Union Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner in Islamabad on 13 October. The discussion centred on migration and mobility, which constitutes one of the eight pillars of the 2019 Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan.
Sharif reaffirmed his commitment to bolster cooperation across every pillar of the strategic engagement framework. Pakistan is currently implementing legislative reforms and institutional strengthening to fight migrant smuggling, human trafficking, and irregular migration.
Expanding legal routes for Pakistani professionals would address European labour shortages while decreasing the influence of smuggling networks. Commissioner Brunner stated he is confident that these national efforts will support the expansion of legal migration and promote mutually beneficial labour mobility between the two regions.
