Experts urge revival of SAARC and issue-based cooperation in South Asia
The India Study Centre at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad hosted a seminar titled “Reimagining Regionalism in South Asia” to discuss regional integration. Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani attended the event as the chief guest.
Speakers at the seminar included Ambassador Masood Khalid, Fazle Lohani Babu, Professor Maneesha Wanasinghe-Pasqual, Ambassador Moinul Haque, and Ambassador Khalid Mahmood. Participants called for a shift toward issue-based regional cooperation and urged nations to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
The SAARC framework has remained dormant for more than 10 years. Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani stated that the success of regional cooperation requires political commitment, mutual confidence, and treating all countries as sovereign equals.
Regional nations should separate political contestations from practical issues and explore cooperation through mini lateral arrangements. There is a possibility that China could be invited to participate in these mini lateral initiatives.
