Pakistan seeks Fitch Ratings upgrade during Bangkok economic meetings
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan met with Fitch Ratings to request an assessment of requirements for moving into the BB sovereign rating category. The discussions took place in Bangkok, Thailand, during the World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings 2026.
Aurangzeb also held talks with Moody’s to examine the nation's economic outlook and potential for further sovereign rating improvements. The minister highlighted that Pakistan has regained access to international capital markets while maintaining fiscal consolidation and consistent primary surpluses.
Pakistan reaffirmed its dedication to finishing the IMF programme, enacting structural reforms, and fostering growth driven by exports. During a separate meeting with Randeep Sarai, Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, Aurangzeb pushed for progress on an investment protection agreement to attract Canadian capital.
The country is scheduled to chair the World Bank and IMF Boards in 2027.
