Punjab agriculture department issues chickpea sowing schedule for farmers
The Punjab agriculture department instructed farmers to plant chickpeas within specific windows to secure higher per-acre production. A department spokesperson stated that the ideal sowing period for Gujrat, Narowal, Jhelum, and Rawalpindi runs from 10 October to 10 November 2026.
For districts in central and southern Punjab, such as Multan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, and Faisalabad, the department suggests sowing from late October until 15 November 2026. The spokesperson noted that highly fertile soils and sugarcane fields planted in September are suitable for chickpea sowing from 20 October to 10 November 2026.
Normal-sized chickpea varieties require a seed rate of 30 kilogrammes per acre. Bold-seeded varieties instead need a rate of 35 kilogrammes per acre.
