Roose's book details AGI race, comparing it to Manhattan Project

Kevin Roose's book, The AGI Chronicles, documents the last decade of artificial intelligence progress, covering the period from OpenAI's establishment up to the present day. Roose argues that the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) represents the 21st century's parallel to the Manhattan Project.
The author conducted interviews with over 150 industry insiders across organisations including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. According to Roose, artificial intelligence is set to reach general, human-level intelligence in the near future.
The formation of OpenAI resulted from concerns that DeepMind might achieve AGI first, prompting Altman, Musk, and others to create the company. Anthropic was established as a company purportedly focused on safety-first artificial intelligence development.
The book also covered the 'agentic' developments that occurred in early 2026.
