NADRA sets rules for changing names on national identity cards

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has established the formal process for individuals to update their names on Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC). Applicants must provide a formal request alongside the new name and the CRMS number from a verified computerized birth certificate.
These birth certificates are required to be issued by a cantonment board, municipal committee, or union council. A single name change is permitted for a citizen during their lifetime.
Women are permitted to change their names following a marriage. Individuals seeking a name change due to a conversion of religion must submit a certificate from a Dar-ul-Ifta.
Instead of providing photocopies of supporting documents, people should supply the relevant document numbers issued by the concerned union council or NADRA.
