Taliban authorities close 33 Ismaili prayer halls across Afghanistan

Taliban authorities in Afghanistan closed at least 33 Ismaili prayer halls to restrict religious activities. Officials ordered worshippers to cease using the Jamatkhanas, arguing that the presence of mihrabs meant the structures should function as mosques.
The closures included 17 Jamatkhanas in the Zebak district, 14 in Ishkashim, and 2 in Wakhan. In Kabul, authorities seized a Shia Imambargah and converted it into a madrasa, barring followers from entering the site.
Shia communities in Logar and Parwan provinces received instructions to limit their ceremonies to designated mosques. Police in Kabul detained 45 Shia men for displaying flags during Ashura.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported that restrictions on religious freedom in the country are growing. Abdul Qayyum Zakir, the Deputy Minister of Defence, was appointed as a special operations commander.
