Asif Hasan wins Pride of Britain Lifetime Achievement Award for cardiac surgery
Asif Hasan received the Pride of Britain Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to medicine. Hasan retired following a 30-year tenure as the head of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.
During his career, the surgeon performed approximately 400 heart transplants. Newcastle’s ‘bridge to transplant’ programme, which Hasan co-led, incorporated the Berlin Heart into its procedures.
He also developed the ‘bootlace closure’ technique to close the sternum after surgery. Patients Max Johnson and Cecilia Adamou were saved under his medical care.
“One of my abiding resolves was that when I stopped work, nobody would miss me. It’s the art of becoming redundant. I wanted to train people so that they are not only competent, but better than me, and that’s what I have achieved. That is my proudest achievement.”
