Pakistan power producer secures $2.10 per ton coal discount through bidding

An Independent Power Producer (IPP) secured a discount of $2.10 per metric ton on imported coal following a competitive bidding process directed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This new rate represents an additional $1.02 per ton reduction compared to the interim supply arrangements previously established with two suppliers.
The firm had initially purchased coal at no discount against the international API-4 coal price index before the bidding and interim measures were initiated. While the bidding concluded, the IPP remains on its previous coal supply contracts and has requested more time from NEPRA to continue these existing agreements.
Concerns have been raised that extending the old supply contracts for too long might drive up fuel procurement costs and place a heavier financial burden on electricity users.
