Elon Musk settled two lawsuits in Austin, Texas, regarding a pledge to award $1 million daily to a randomly selected registered voter in a 2024 swing state. Two residents of Arizona filed the legal actions, alleging that Musk's lottery was a fraud.

In late 2025, the H5 virus was detected on Heard Island, where it killed more than 13,000 baby seals. Southern elephant seals, which can reach weights of 3,600 kg, have experienced pup mortality rates exceeding 90 percent in some instances.

Australia's environment department announced it would remove personnel from a research station on Macquarie Island in August. The department cited the "psycho-social risk to expeditioners of a potential H5 avian influenza outbreak" as a reason for the move.

Officials believe the virus could likely cause a significant mortality event for elephant seals during the next breeding season.

Chinese AI supply chain firms to continue listing in Hong Kong

Chinese AI supply chain firms to continue listing in Hong Kong

Chinese artificial intelligence supply chain companies are expected to maintain their listings in Hong Kong. Simon Yuan noted that companies planning to list in the territory benefit from a nearly equal split between international and domestic Chinese demand.

Local liquidity provides a foundation of support for the market. Capital flowing south from the Chinese mainland is becoming a primary buying force, according to Yuan.

Many hardware players from China have created manufacturing bases outside of the mainland. Global demand for AI infrastructure has enabled Chinese hardware suppliers to achieve higher unit prices and increased sales volumes.

Next year, the focus of Hong Kong's equity capital markets is projected to move toward developers of Chinese AI models and applications. Yuan, who attended IMF meetings in Bangkok, observed that recent valuation drops for data centre companies mostly began in the US market.

Pakistan demands Kabul end cross-border terrorism for successful dialogue

Pakistan's Foreign Office stated that any successful dialogue with Afghanistan requires a commitment from Kabul to end cross-border terrorism. The government remains open to engagement provided it produces tangible results.

Earlier in October 2026, representatives from Pakistan and the Taliban regime met in Russia for regional consultations. No joint communique was issued during the Moscow Format talks because the Taliban objected to including any references to terrorism.

Russia offered its good offices to resolve the current impasse between the two nations. The Foreign Office clarified it was not aware of any formal Russian mediation initiative.

Qatar, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and China have also attempted to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Russia currently stands as the only state that recognises the Taliban regime.

The Russian state has been targeted by IS-K terrorism. The Foreign Office called for a "verifiable mechanism" to address these issues.

Pakistan targets indigenous AI development to secure economic and military interests

Pakistan is prioritising the creation of an indigenous nuclear deterrent programme as a core policy imperative, a strategy initiated in the mid-1960s. The Chagai test required a development period exceeding 20 years.

Current annual IT exports from the country total $4.6bn. Artificial intelligence technology poses a threat to entry-level coding, call centres, and freelancing jobs.

High-end sensors, drones, and electronic warfare systems now rely on AI technology. Corporate compute bills for AI might reach hundreds of millions of dollars by the end of the decade.

Pakistan passes 27th Constitutional amendment in 2025

Pakistan passed the 27th Constitutional amendment in 2025. The 26th Constitutional amendment was also enacted in 2024.

Legislative chambers recently endorsed the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Federal ministers stated that the deposed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government maintained ties with terrorist organisations.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party maintains that the 2024 election was stolen. Despite these recent changes, the PTI secured a plurality in the national legislature during the 2024 election.

Historical milestones include the 1973 adoption of the Constitution and the 2010 unanimous passage of the 18th Constitutional Amendment. Earlier political developments saw Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif agree to the Charter of Democracy in 2006.

The country experienced a breakup in 1971, while the NWFP government was removed just seven days after independence. Observers note that both civilian and military governments have steadily eroded the independence of the judiciary.

Traditional clay ghughu ghoray toys face extinction as modern imports dominate market

Traditional clay ghughu ghoray toys face extinction as modern imports dominate market

The 300-year-old traditional clay toy ghughu ghoray has virtually disappeared from the modern marketplace. Craftsmen and potters have abandoned the profession, leading to a sharp decline in production since the early 20th century.

Nomadic women from various communities sold these toys during the 19th century. Historical links connect ghughu ghoray to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro.

Potters and nomadic tribes in Punjab, specifically in Multan and Attock, traditionally manufactured the items. Artisans created the clay versions using fine soil gathered from the Chenab and Ravi rivers.

Nomadic tribes also produced a variation of the toy using straw, reeds, waste paper, and old cloth. Cheap plastic and electronic toys imported from China have contributed significantly to the decline of ghughu ghoray.

Kamil Shah has operated a toy shop in Rawalpindi for the last 24 years.

Following his recovery, Bumrah returned to T20 action at the Asian Games where India secured a gold medal. India is set to host Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in limited-overs series, while a five-test series against Australia will conclude in February.

The 2027 World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from 2 October to 21 November 2027.

The rebels launched three ballistic missiles at the security forces while they were conducting a training exercise. Government forces initiated a campaign this month to recapture areas previously held by the Houthis.

The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, leading to a Saudi-led military intervention in 2015. While the sides agreed to a truce in 2022 that held until this year, the Houthis escalated attacks on Saudi Arabia targeting Saudi Aramco and Riyadh’s international airport.

The rebels also advanced in September toward territory near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Pakistan health experts urge mandatory warning labels on food products

Pakistan health experts urge mandatory warning labels on food products

Health experts have called for the implementation of mandatory, evidence-based warning labels on the front of food packaging. Non-communicable diseases account for approximately 47.22 per cent of total deaths in Pakistan, according to the World Health Organization.

Prominent labels on packaged goods can assist consumers in identifying items with high levels of salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Consuming these ingredients in excess is linked to higher risks of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes.

The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination stressed the need for public awareness and evidence-based nutrition policies. Mandatory labels might prompt manufacturers to reformulate products to lower unhealthy ingredient content, though this remains uncertain.

Reducing diet-related health risks requires coordinated action between the government, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.

Scientists identify new tyrannosaur species in Canadian fossil record

File photo

Researchers discovered a new species of tyrannosaur in Canada named Tromerosaurus solumons. The predator lived 77 million years ago and reached a length of 8 metres.

First foot fossils of the creature were unearthed in southern Alberta in 2010 and 2011. Anatomical features include a small sinus system similar to Gorgosaurus libratus and a hole near the front of the upper jaw like Daspletosaurus.

Experts classified the predator as an early member of the albertosaurine group. Powers stated, "It was just so different and so unique that it was very clearly a new species."

The discovery suggests that tyrannosaur evolution might be more complicated than a simple stepwise growth into T. rex. Voris said, "We need to go deeper in the rock record."
