Houthi missile strike kills 53 in Yemen training camp
A Houthi missile strike on a government security forces training camp in Yemen’s Shabwa province killed 53 people on Monday. An additional 200 people sustained injuries during the assault.
The rebels launched three ballistic missiles at the security forces while they were conducting a training exercise. Government forces initiated a campaign this month to recapture areas previously held by the Houthis.
The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, leading to a Saudi-led military intervention in 2015. While the sides agreed to a truce in 2022 that held until this year, the Houthis escalated attacks on Saudi Arabia targeting Saudi Aramco and Riyadh’s international airport.
The rebels also advanced in September toward territory near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
