Arab television faces buyer shortage despite abundance of creative talent

Mariam Naoum identified a shortage of buyers for Arab television projects while noting that creative talent remains plentiful in the region. Naoum, who selected projects for the CineGouna Series, consulted various platforms regarding their specific needs before making her final choices.
Six projects were ultimately chosen for the series based on a balance of artistic and practical considerations. "We were looking for projects that are producible, so it wasn’t only a creative approach," Naoum said.
Haitham Dabbour, the founder of the regional content development platform and collaborative writers’ room Irth, argues that a small number of owners reduces competition. Dabbour, who also serves as a producer, screenwriter, and author of "The Tale of Daye’s Family," believes this market structure leaves less room for taking risks.
"We were looking for projects that are producible, so it wasn’t only a creative approach," said Mariam Naoum.
